The Winfield Recreation Council is proud to nominate Steve
Willingham as Volunteer of the Year.
Steve has been involved with the Warriors Wrestling Club nearly
since its inception 35 years ago, at first as a participant and then
as a coach and administrator. Steve has run the Warriors club for
the past fifteen years and has seen it grow from 30 kids to over 100
The Warriors Wrestling Club requires year-round attention, with
camps and league meetings in the off season, culminating in the
practices and competitions during the season
In addition to the Warriors Wresting Club, Steve in one of the
founders of the Carroll Wrestling Association, a countywide league
for in-house wrestlers. Three of the Warriors’ five teams compete in
the CWA. In his "spare time" Steve coaches his daughter's South
Carroll Soccer Club team in the Frederick County League, attends
night school for his teaching certificate, and is very active in his
church’s youth group.
Steve sets a high standard for his wrestlers, and his dedication has
paid off in a successful program on and off the mat. Under Steve,
the Warriors have produced countless individual youth league
champions and the club has captured a number of Maryland Junior
Wrestling League championships, placing 2nd last year. He has also
led the team to one Maryland-Virginia State Tournament team title.
Club wrestlers have gone on to wrestle for many of the area high
schools such as South Carroll, Liberty, Century, Winters Mill,
Hammond, Glenelg, and McDonough. 16 Warriors have gone on to become
Maryland state champions, and 16 other Warriors have placed at High
School State tournaments. Nine have gone on to wrestle in college
and 2 have become NCAA All-Americans.
It is because of Steve, in particular, and the other wrestling
volunteers, that the wrestling programs exist. The Winfield
community is a better place because of them and we are grateful for
their efforts.
